Equifax Breach

If you have a credit report, there is a good possibility that you may be one of the 143 million consumers from the United States, United Kingdom and Canada whose sensitive personal information was exposed in a data breach at Equifax, one of the nation’s three major credit reporting agencies.

According to Equifax, the breach lasted from May 13 through July 30. The hackers accessed people’s names, Social Security numbers, birth dates, addresses and, in some instances, driver’s license numbers. They also stole credit card numbers for over 200,000 people and dispute documents with personal identifying information for about 182,000 people.

Wauchula State Bank is encouraging all customers to follow the instruction below to find out if their information was exposed.

Steps to take to help protect your information from misuse: 

  • Visit Equifax’s website, www.equifaxsecurity2017.com.
  • Click on “Am I Impacted?” and enter your last name and the last six digits of your Social Security number. Your Social Security number is sensitive information, so make sure you’re on a secure computer and an encrypted network connection any time you enter it. The site will tell you if you’ve been affected by this breach.
  • Whether or not your information was exposed, as a U.S. consumer you can get a year of free credit monitoring and other services. After checking to see if your personal information may have been compromised, click on “Enroll.” Complete the requested information, review the Terms and Conditions, then click “Continue.” You will receive an email in a few days to finalize registration. You have until November 21, 2017, to enroll.

  • They engaged a leading, independent cybersecurity firm to conduct a comprehensive forensic review to determine the scope of the intrusion
  • The company established the dedicated website to help consumers determine if their information was potentially impacted
  • They have offered a free credit file monitoring system, Trusted ID Premier, for anyone wishing to take advantage of the service
  • They have established a dedicated call center at 866-447-7559, available 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. ET
